Peterson – Lavine
Come as you are
Kurt Cobain and the Grunge Revolution
Over 80 photos, including some unpublished, to retrace the history of the grunge music scene and that of its undisputed hero, Kurt Cobain, symbol of the American counterculture of the 90s, between the end of the cold war and the illusion of the New Economy.
From 7 March to 14 June 2020, in Florence, Palazzo Medici Riccardi hosts the photographic exhibition “Peterson – Lavine. Come as you are: Kurt Cobain and the Grunge Revolution ”. Curated by ONO contemporary art, the exhibition is organized and promoted by OEO Firenze Art and Le Nozze di Figaro, in collaboration with the Metropolitan City of Florence, the Municipality of Florence and MUS.E.
“Twenty-six years after the death of Kurt Cobain, the myth of Nirvana does not tend to fade and continues to have a communicative and expressive force that manages to breach the younger generations making the heart palpitate to those who lived their saga”.
Two sections: on one side the images of Charles Peterson, official photographer of Sub Pop Records, on the birth of Nirvana, the concerts and the grunge scene in Seattle. On the other, the shots by Michael Lavine, a famous advertising photographer, taken from posed photos and images for magazines. An unprecedented combination that immerses the public in the fascination of those extraordinary days, where fans were an integral part of a musical revolution, and not only.
Michael Lavine captures Nirvana in the studio in four different moments, from the months of their first formation, to the years of worldwide success, when his wife Courtney Love was next to the band leader: shots that have become a symbol of an era. His friendship with Cobain allows him to create a true visual recording of the group, which he accompanies in the studio in all the different moments of his parable, until a few days after the disappearance of its leader.
The contribution of Charles Peterson is instead fundamental not only for the history of Nirvana but also for the birth of grunge. Using a personal style, he creates his own unmistakable trademark: his flashes, very powerful to be able to pierce the darkness of the clubs, are at the same time able to isolate the subjects in a classic and iconic way; his is a Cobain portrayed in intimate images, which fully show how the weight of success had experienced the artist.
And again, images of Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Mudhoney … The exhibition opens up the whole musical scene of Seattle at the end of the millennium, immortalizing a fundamental and recent period in American history: the crisis of Reagan hedonism, the new suburbs (and his countercultures) and the incipient New Economy that will generate its giants in Seattle.
“Come as you are” is a sound and vision exhibition, in whose evocative images more generations will be able to recognize themselves, reliving illusions, hopes and that style that at the end of the second millennium saw them identify with a soundtrack and its heroes.
